Trump received FIFA’s first-ever peace prize during the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington. Trump said he did not attend the ceremony to collect an award but received one regardless. FIFA created the prize to honour individuals who promote global peace through exceptional actions. FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented the award during a widely broadcast ceremony.
Event Dominates the World Cup Draw Ceremony
The event took place at the Kennedy Center at Trump’s request. International media captured Trump’s entrance as he dominated the scene throughout the ceremony.
Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum also attended the event.
The United States, Canada, and Mexico will jointly host the 2026 World Cup.
Infantino praised Trump while unveiling next year’s tournament plans. Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli performed “Nessun Dorma,” a favourite at Trump’s campaign rallies.
FIFA Highlights Trump’s Role in Global Conflicts
A FIFA video credited Trump for resolving the Gaza conflict. The video also highlighted his efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine. Trump received a large gold-plated trophy shaped like a globe held by raised hands.
Infantino said Trump deserved the honour for promoting unity and global peace. Trump wore an additional medal as Infantino continued praising his efforts.
Trump Praises Himself While Addressing National Issues
Trump claimed the award honoured both him and the sport. He said the United States was “not doing too well” before he assumed office. He argued that the country had become “the hottest anywhere in the world.”
Trump also told reporters he had “settled eight wars” within ten months. He insisted he did not need prizes, claiming he only wanted to save lives.
Award Comes Amid Domestic Controversies
Trump received the prize shortly after freezing immigration applications from nineteen countries.
His administration announced the move following a shooting that killed two National Guard members.
Days earlier, Trump drew condemnation for calling Somali immigrants “garbage.”
The remarks generated sharp criticism at home and abroad.
