Gul Jan Arrested After Justifying Murders in Controversial Statement
QUETTA: Authorities have made a significant breakthrough in the Degari double murder case by collecting DNA samples from the mother of one of the victims, Gul Jan Bibi. The move comes shortly after Gul Jan was arrested for releasing a video in which she described the brutal killings as a form of “punishment” in accordance with Balochi customs, effectively defending the crime.
According to police officials, the Serious Crime Investigation Wing requested the collection of DNA samples from Gul Jan to further their investigation. Following this request, hair, blood, and saliva samples were obtained under medical supervision. Police Surgeon Dr. Ayesha Faiz confirmed that the biological specimens were properly sealed and have been handed over to the Serious Crime Investigation Wing. These will now be sent to the Punjab Forensic Science Agency for DNA analysis.
DNA Tests Aim to Establish Familial Links and Strengthen Investigation
The DNA samples collected from Gul Jan are intended to confirm the biological relationship between her and one of the deceased, Bano Bibi. Earlier in the investigation, authorities had already exhumed Bano Bibi’s body to collect DNA material for comparison. This process aims to clarify familial links and potentially strengthen the prosecution’s case.
Interestingly, Gul Jan had previously expressed her willingness to undergo DNA testing in a video statement, though her arrest was prompted by her apparent endorsement of the killings in a separate, more controversial recording. In that video, she appeared to justify the murders based on local traditions, triggering widespread public outrage and raising suspicions about her possible involvement.
The Degari case has captured national attention due to the disturbing nature of the crime and the cultural implications raised by the suspect’s statement. Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and results from the forensic analysis are expected to play a key role in determining the next steps.
