A powerful explosion struck the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) police station on University Road in Peshawar on Sunday, killing one police officer and injuring two others. Officials confirmed that the blast originated from explosives stored inside the building, triggering widespread panic and a large-scale emergency response.
Stored Explosives Ignite Massive Fire
According to initial police reports, the explosion occurred in a section of the CTD facility where seized explosives were stored. The powerful blast tore through the structure, igniting a fire that quickly spread across the warehouse area. Flames engulfed parts of the building, sending plumes of thick smoke into the air and reducing several sections to rubble.
City Police Chief Mian Saeed said the impact of the explosion caused part of the building to collapse. “One officer lost his life, while two others were injured in the incident,” he confirmed. The injured were swiftly transported to a nearby hospital, where they are receiving medical care.
Emergency Teams Rush to the Scene
Moments after the explosion, rescue and fire teams arrived at the site to battle the spreading flames. Firefighters worked tirelessly to control the blaze, while police cordoned off the area to ensure the safety of nearby residents.
Eyewitnesses reported scenes of chaos as smoke filled the air and rescue workers struggled to clear debris from the collapsed structure. The fire continued to burn for several hours before it was fully contained.
Investigation Underway to Determine Cause
Authorities have launched a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion. Preliminary findings suggest that the blast was accidental and caused by the ignition of stored explosives inside the CTD premises. Forensic experts are collecting evidence from the site to assess the extent of damage and confirm how the explosion occurred.
Officials are also reviewing safety protocols related to the storage of confiscated materials at police facilities. The incident has raised questions about the handling of explosives and other hazardous items within security departments.
City Gripped by Shock and Concern
The sudden blast has shaken residents across Peshawar, a city that has witnessed several violent incidents in the past. Locals expressed deep concern over the safety of law enforcement personnel and called for stricter measures to prevent such accidents in the future.
As investigators continue their work, authorities have assured the public that safety checks are being intensified at all sensitive locations in the city.
The tragic loss of a police officer and the injuries sustained by two others have once again highlighted the risks faced daily by security personnel working on the front lines of counterterrorism efforts in Pakistan.
