KARACHI: Police in Karachi have exposed a major food safety scandal involving rotten poultry meat.
They arrested two suspects during a raid near the Railway Crossing in Mosa Colony. The accused, Anwar and Kamal, allegedly supplied dead chickens to hotels and restaurants across the city.
Police Seize 80 Kilograms of Rotten Chicken
According to the Gulberg police, the suspects bought chickens that died during transport.
They then sold the dead birds to food centers in F.B. Area, New Karachi, and nearby localities.
During the operation, police recovered 80 kilograms of decayed poultry meat from the suspects’ possession.
Officials confirmed that the recovered meat was destroyed immediately to block its entry into the food chain.
Suspects Ran the Operation for Years
Investigators revealed that both men had operated the illegal business for several years.
They profited by selling unfit meat to small hotels and restaurants at cheap rates.
Police have filed a case at Gulberg Police Station under relevant food safety and criminal laws.
Sindh Food Authority Begins Parallel Investigation
The Sindh Food Authority (SFA) launched its own probe to trace eateries that purchased meat from the suspects.
Authorities vowed strict action against those involved in compromising food safety standards.
Public Urged to Stay Cautious
Officials have urged citizens to remain vigilant about where they eat.
They warned that consuming unhygienic meat can cause food poisoning and severe bacterial infections.
Similar Crackdown in Sargodha
Meanwhile, in Sargodha, the Punjab Food Authority seized 1,200 kilograms of unhygienic meat meant for local restaurants. Officials destroyed the tainted meat on-site and initiated legal action against those responsible.
