US President Donald Trump said Washington and Tehran have engaged in both direct and indirect contacts, expressing optimism about a potential agreement. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, he described Iranโs new leadership as โvery reasonable,โ while adding that a deal remains likely but not guaranteed.
Moreover, Trump claimed the United States had effectively achieved regime change in Tehran following strikes that reportedly killed top leadership figures. However, he reiterated that their successors appear open to engagement, suggesting a possible diplomatic opening despite ongoing hostilities.
Meanwhile, Iranโs parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf accused Washington of sending mixed signals. He said the US had floated negotiations while simultaneously preparing for a potential ground invasion. He warned that Iran would respond decisively if American troops entered its territory, stressing that the country would not accept surrender or humiliation.
At the same time, Israel significantly escalated its military campaign. The Israeli military said it carried out more than 140 air strikes across central and western Iran within 24 hours, targeting missile launch sites and storage facilities. Iranian state media reported damage to Mehrabad airport and a petrochemical facility in Tabriz.
In response, Iran launched missile attacks toward Israel. One projectile, or its debris, struck a chemical plant near the city of Beersheba, prompting safety warnings over hazardous materials.
Furthermore, reports indicated a growing US military presence in the region. According to The New York Times, several hundred special operations forces have deployed, adding to thousands of US marines who arrived earlier. Although the Pentagon has reviewed options that may include ground forces, Trump has not approved such plans.
