The Research Centre for International Maritime Law & Practice (RCIMLP) has been officially appointed as the maritime law consultant for Pakistanโs first-ever ferry service by Sea Keepers International. This historic development was approved on August 5 by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, which granted the ferry service license to the UK-based international ferry operator.
Sea Keepers International is set to operate ferry routes that will connect Pakistan with Iran and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, marking a significant milestone in enhancing regional maritime connectivity. The introduction of this ferry service is expected to open new avenues for trade, tourism, and regional cooperation, thereby strengthening Pakistanโs position as a key maritime hub in South Asia.
The role of RCIMLP as the legal consultant is crucial in ensuring that the ferry service functions within a strong and comprehensive legal framework. The organization will ensure adherence to international maritime laws and best practices while addressing the specific regulatory and operational challenges unique to Pakistanโs maritime environment.
This includes collaborating closely with various stakeholders to navigate complex regulations, uphold safety standards, and promote sustainable maritime operations that align with global norms.
Attorney Muslim Bin Aqeel, CEO of RCIMLP, expressed his pride in being part of this pioneering project. He emphasized the centerโs commitment to fortifying the maritime legal infrastructure not only in Pakistan but also across the Middle East and North African regions. โWe are honored to partner with Sea Keepers International on this groundbreaking initiative and will continue to work diligently to strengthen the maritime legal framework,โ he stated.
Mr. Aqeel further highlighted that RCIMLPโs comprehensive legal support will be instrumental in ensuring the ferry serviceโs long-term success. Beyond enhancing maritime connectivity, the project is expected to significantly contribute to the sustainable development of Pakistanโs blue economy.
The ferry service represents a transformative step for Pakistanโs maritime sector, promising to boost economic growth, foster regional collaboration, and improve people-to-people ties with neighboring Gulf countries. This initiative underscores Pakistanโs commitment to developing its maritime infrastructure and capitalizing on its strategic geographical location.
