ISLAMABAD: Chinese Foreign Minister and senior Politburo member of the Communist Party of China, Wang Yi, is set to arrive in Islamabad on Thursday to co-chair the 6th Pakistan-China Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue.
Wang Yi is visiting at the invitation of Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar. The high-level dialogue is part of the two nations’ ongoing diplomatic engagements aimed at further deepening their “All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership.”
According to officials, the talks will focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation in a wide range of sectors, including economic ties, trade, and regional security, while also reaffirming mutual support for each other’s core national interests. Both sides are expected to underscore their shared commitment to regional peace, development, and stability at a time when shifting global alignments are placing new pressures on South Asia.
Strengthening Ties in a Changing Region
The visit is being described as part of the regular high-level exchanges between Islamabad and Beijing. Over the years, Pakistan and China have continued to consolidate ties under projects such as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a central component of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative. The latest dialogue is likely to cover not only economic cooperation but also strategic and security coordination against the backdrop of evolving regional dynamics.
Wang Yi’s Wider South Asian Tour
Wang Yi’s trip to Pakistan comes shortly after his three-day visit to India, where he sought to recalibrate long-tense relations with New Delhi. During that stop, he held talks with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and was also expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Indian media reports suggest that Modi himself may consider a visit to China later this month, signaling a possible thaw between the two Asian giants. India’s foreign ministry highlighted that “important engagements of the India-China Special Representatives and on bilateral relations” were scheduled during Wang’s stay.
Islamabad on Diplomatic Radar
For Pakistan, hosting the 6th Strategic Dialogue offers an opportunity to showcase its enduring partnership with Beijing, while also sending a message of continuity in foreign policy amidst domestic economic challenges and shifting geopolitical currents.
