China has called on Pakistan and Afghanistan to address their recent tensions through dialogue and consultation, stressing the need to avoid escalation and preserve regional stability. The statement comes after an exchange of fire between Pakistani and Afghan border forces on December 5, raising new concerns about security along the shared frontier.
Beijing Stresses Need for Calm and Constructive Engagement
During a regular press briefing on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasised that both Pakistan and Afghanistan are long-standing friendly neighbours of China. He noted that the two countries share deep historical ties and geographic proximity, making cooperation essential for peace in the region.
Guo urged both sides to “continue handling their differences through dialogue,” calling it the most effective way to ease tensions and prevent further incidents. He highlighted that managing disagreements peacefully is necessary not only for bilateral stability but also for the security of the broader region.
Addressing the December 5 border clash, the spokesperson refrained from assigning blame but reiterated China’s consistent position: regional partners must prioritise communication, mutual understanding and restraint.
China Offers Support for Peaceful Relations
Guo Jiakun further stated that China is ready to work with the international community to play a constructive role in strengthening ties between Pakistan and Afghanistan. He underscored Beijing’s commitment to supporting diplomatic efforts that foster cooperation, stability and development.
China has maintained close relations with both Islamabad and Kabul and has repeatedly positioned itself as a neutral facilitator in regional disputes. The spokesperson reaffirmed that Beijing’s objective is to help neighbouring countries resolve misunderstandings peacefully and promote lasting harmony across the region.
