Global Condemnation and Calls for International Law
China reacted strongly, saying it was deeply shocked by what it described as US use of force against a sovereign state. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said the action violated international law and undermined Venezuela’s sovereignty and independence. Furthermore, Beijing warned that such moves threaten peace and stability across Latin America and the Caribbean and urged Washington to follow the UN Charter and stop interfering in other countries’ internal affairs.
France also criticized the development, calling Maduro’s arrest a violation of international law. The French Foreign Ministry stressed that only the Venezuelan people have the right to decide their country’s future. Similarly, the European Union’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas urged restraint, emphasizing respect for international law and civilian safety, while noting concerns for European citizens in Venezuela.
The United Kingdom distanced itself from the operation, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer saying all facts must emerge and confirming Britain had no role. Spain advised de-escalation and offered mediation, while Italy said it is monitoring the safety of its 160,000 citizens in Venezuela. Brazil condemned the action as unacceptable interference and warned it could destabilize the region.
Washington Announces Indictments, Allies Seek Clarity
The United States on Saturday announced sweeping criminal charges against Venezuela’s ousted president Nicolás Maduro and his wife, triggering sharp reactions across Europe, Asia, and Latin America. US Attorney General Pamela Bondi said a New York court indicted Maduro and his wife on charges including drug terrorism, cocaine trafficking, and possession of prohibited weapons. Moreover, she said Maduro would soon face trial in US courts, signaling Washington’s determination to pursue the case aggressively.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump said he intends to consult allied governments about the Venezuela operation. His statement suggested broader diplomatic coordination as international concern grows. Earlier, Trump claimed US forces carried out a large-scale strike in Venezuela and captured Maduro and his wife, later flying them out of the country amid explosions and a declared state of emergency in Caracas.
