China has expressed concern over India’s decision to deploy additional troops at their disputed border, stating that it is “not conducive to easing tensions,” according to a foreign ministry spokesperson on Friday.
Reports indicate that India has redirected a contingent of 10,000 soldiers, previously stationed at its western border, to reinforce its disputed border with China.
While both countries have agreed to maintain dialogue through military and diplomatic channels, recent efforts have been made to address border issues, particularly in the western section of the China-India border.
India’s redeployment involves stationing 10,000 soldiers along its 532-kilometer border with China in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, areas bordering the Himalayas, as reported by Indian media outlets.
Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, emphasized China’s commitment to collaborating with India to uphold peace and stability in border areas. However, Mao expressed reservations, stating that India’s actions do not contribute to peace-building efforts or tension reduction along the border.
The relationship between India and China is marked by a 3,800-km frontier, much of which remains poorly demarcated. The region witnessed deadly clashes in mid-2020, resulting in the loss of lives on both sides. Both countries have since fortified positions and increased troop and equipment deployments in the area.
