China Eastern Airlines
China Eastern Airlines has revealed plans for a new direct flight linking Shanghai, China, with Buenos Aires, Argentina. The service, set to begin on December 4, 2025, will become the world’s longest direct commercial route. It will cover approximately 12,229 miles (19,650 kilometers).
Flight Operations and Schedule
The airline announced that the service will operate twice weekly in each direction. The flights will be numbered MU745 from Shanghai to Buenos Aires and MU746 for the return journey. A Boeing 777-300ER will operate the long-haul service. The Shanghai to Buenos Aires leg is expected to last about 25.5 hours, while the return flight will take nearly 29 hours.
Stopover in Auckland
Despite being marketed as a direct service, the flight will include a planned two-hour technical stop in Auckland, New Zealand. During this stop, passengers will remain onboard as the aircraft is refueled and serviced. This arrangement ensures that travelers experience minimal disruption during the ultra-long journey.
Ticket Pricing and Classes
Economy class tickets are priced between $1,538 and $2,270 USD. Business class fares start at $5,000 USD. Tickets are now available through China Eastern Airlines’ official booking channels. Passengers are encouraged to check schedules and travel policies before purchasing tickets.
Strengthening Asia–South America Links
This route marks China Eastern Airlines’ first direct connection to South America. By reducing the need for stopovers in the United States or Europe, the airline expects the route to boost tourism, business, and cultural exchange between the two regions.
Long-Haul Flight Records
The current record for the world’s longest non-stop passenger flight is the 19-hour Singapore–New York route. China Eastern Airlines’ new Shanghai–Buenos Aires service highlights the rapid expansion of ultra-long-haul air travel worldwide.
