China has reiterated its support for Iran’s right to safeguard its national interests while opposing what it described as “unilateral bullying,” according to a statement released by the Chinese Foreign Ministry. The remarks underscore Beijing’s continued backing of Tehran at a time of heightened diplomatic activity involving Iran and the United States.
In the statement, China said it supports Iran in protecting its sovereignty, security, and national dignity. Moreover, Beijing affirmed its support for Iran’s legitimate rights and interests, signalling opposition to external pressure and coercive measures. Chinese officials have consistently argued that disputes involving Iran should be resolved through dialogue rather than sanctions or force.
Furthermore, the ministry stressed that respect for international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter remains essential. Although the statement did not name any specific country, the reference to “unilateral bullying” was widely interpreted as criticism of US policies toward Iran. As a result, China positioned itself as a defender of multilateralism and diplomatic engagement.
Oman hosts new round of indirect diplomacy
Meanwhile, indirect talks between the United States and Iran have begun in Oman, marking another attempt to ease longstanding tensions between the two rivals. The discussions are being facilitated by Omani intermediaries, continuing Muscat’s traditional role as a neutral mediator in regional diplomacy.
Iran’s delegation is being led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while the US side is headed by President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff. Although details of the agenda have not been made public, observers believe the talks could address regional security, sanctions, and broader diplomatic relations.
Despite the start of negotiations, expectations remain cautious. Both sides have maintained firm public positions, and progress is likely to be gradual. Nevertheless, the talks signal a willingness to engage indirectly, even as global powers such as China publicly voice support for Iran’s stance.
