Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority initiated a tree plantation campaign on Monday on the Margalla Hills.
The CDA’s environment wing announced plans to plant one million trees throughout the hills as part of this initiative. The launch ceremony took place near Trail 3, where Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change Romina Khurshid Alam inaugurated the event by planting a sapling.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Tarar emphasized the significance of the Margalla Hills as Islamabad’s identity, stressing the joint responsibility of citizens and the government in preserving them from environmental threats. He noted that Islamabad boasts better air quality compared to other cities and underscored the importance of combating climate change through extensive tree plantation efforts.
Highlighting Pakistan’s minimal carbon emissions yet significant vulnerability to climate change impacts, Minister Tarar called for international collaboration to address this global challenge effectively.
Romina Khurshid Alam echoed these sentiments, urging concerted community efforts to ensure the success of tree plantation campaigns.
According to CDA officials, the event aimed to promote environmental conservation and mitigate the effects of heat waves and human activities.
Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa expressed gratitude to the minister and the PMโs aide for their support and participation in the CDA-organized event. He also highlighted pledges from corporate sectors and civil society to plant an additional four million trees, with the CDA already arranging for one million trees as part of their commitment to enhancing the region’s green cover.
