The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has approved a feasibility study for an electric tram project in Islamabad, aiming to modernise the cityโs public transport system and promote environmentally sustainable mobility.
The decision was taken during a meeting at CDA Headquarters on Wednesday, chaired by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa. Officials discussed the practical implementation, infrastructure requirements, and integration of both electric tram and electric bus systems in the federal capital.
Under the proposed project, the electric tram system will include depots, parking facilities, charging stations, and state-of-the-art maintenance services. The CDA emphasised that the tram system will be developed in alignment with an Intelligent Transport System framework, ensuring a fully modern, comfortable, and eco-friendly transit solution.
Chairman Randhawa directed that the entire system should be digital and cashless, enhancing convenience for commuters while incorporating advanced technology. He further instructed that carbon credit mechanisms be considered as part of the project to reinforce its environmentally friendly objectives.
The feasibility study will examine linking the tram network to key locations across Islamabad, including Islamabad International Airport, and will use updated ridership data along with future demand projections to guide planning. The study will also assess the integration of the tram with existing and planned transit systems to ensure seamless connectivity and efficiency.
โThis project reflects CDAโs commitment to a modern, sustainable, and technology-driven transport network in Islamabad,โ said Chairman Randhawa. โThe feasibility study will provide critical insights to ensure the system meets the cityโs growing transport needs while promoting green mobility.โ
The CDA aims to complete the feasibility assessment promptly, setting the foundation for a future electric tram network that enhances urban mobility, reduces traffic congestion, and contributes to the cityโs environmental sustainability goals.
