The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced two new major infrastructure projects for Islamabad, including the overhauling of the Islamabad Expressway service road and the construction of a new road linking Margalla Road to the cityโs boundary, where it will connect with a proposed route of Rawalpindi. These projects aim to improve connectivity and ease traffic congestion in the rapidly expanding capital region.
According to CDA officials, the planning and revenue departments are still completing the land acquisition process for the new Margalla Road link. Meanwhile, the Islamabad Expressway service road, which has remained neglected for years, is set for long-overdue repairs.
The stretch between Sohan and Koral is in particularly poor condition, riddled with potholes and uneven surfaces that cause severe inconvenience for commuters during rush hours.
Work is also progressing on the T-Chowk flyover, a Rs. 1.4 billion project aimed at ensuring smoother traffic flow between Lahore and Islamabad.
The three-lane, 1.1-kilometer flyover, located at the intersection of GT Road and the Expressway, has achieved 46 percent completion. Officials have set a 150-day completion target, and the project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif last month.
In addition, the CDA has awarded the Shaheen Chowk project, which will soon be inaugurated. The authority also plans to build an underpass at Khyaban-i-Iqbal (Margalla Road) intersecting 9th Avenue to address persistent traffic congestion in the area.
This zone experiences heavy traffic from nearby government offices, schools, and universities, often leading to gridlocks during peak hours.
These projects reflect CDAโs renewed focus on infrastructure development and urban mobility. By addressing critical bottlenecks and improving road conditions, the civic body aims to enhance commuting efficiency, reduce travel time, and support Islamabadโs growing transport needs.
