Unidentified men set three cargo trucks on fire in Karachi’s Landhi and Korangi areas on Tuesday, police said.
One truck was torched in Korangi Number 6, while two others were burned in Landhi. The assailants managed to flee the scene before authorities arrived.
The trucks, which were carrying various goods, were en route from Quaidabad Dawood Chowrangi to Korangi Crossing. No casualties were reported. Firefighters quickly responded to the incident and worked to extinguish the flames.
DIG East Usman Ghani took “serious notice” of the incident, ordering legal action against the perpetrators. He emphasized that strict measures would be implemented to maintain law and order in the city.
The police have launched an investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible.
The arson attack follows growing concerns over fatalities involving dumper trucks in the city. Last week, the Sindh government imposed a ban on the entry of heavy vehicles during the daytime. Dumper trucks are now only allowed to enter Karachi between 11 pm and 6 am.
Despite the Sindh High Court’s ban on heavy vehicles during daylight hours, enforcement has been lax, with limited restrictions on trailers and inadequate monitoring of dumpers transporting goods and construction materials.
In the past 40 days, traffic accidents involving dumpers have resulted in 112 fatalities and 216 injuries, drawing widespread criticism of the provincial authorities and traffic police for failing to enforce safety regulations.
In response to public outrage, including from opposition parties and Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, the government is taking steps to reinforce the ban on dumper trucks during the day to improve road safety.
