A significant development has emerged in the investigation into the deadly fire at a Swiss ski resort bar, with authorities confirming that the blaze was triggered by sparking champagne bottle candles during New Yearโs Eve celebrations at Crans-Montana.
Swiss investigators said the candles, commonly used for celebratory displays, are believed to have ignited flammable materials inside the crowded Le Constellation bar shortly after midnight.
The focus of the probe has now widened to determine whether the venueโs ceiling soundproofing complied with fire safety regulations and whether the use of spark-shooting candles was permitted indoors.
The incident occurred on Thursday, January 1, 2026, when a fire tore through the popular bar, killing 40 people and injuring 119 others, according to authorities.
The bar was packed with revellers celebrating the New Year when the flames spread rapidly, leaving little time for escape. Officials have described the tragedy as one of the deadliest in Switzerlandโs history.
In addition to examining building materials, investigators will assess other safety measures at the venue, including the availability and functionality of fire extinguishers, emergency exits, and evacuation procedures. The attorney general of Valais has indicated that criminal prosecutions could follow if negligence or other legal violations are established.
The disaster has had international repercussions, as victims included nationals from several countries. Police confirmed that 71 Swiss citizens were among the dead and injured, along with 14 French and 11 Italian nationals. Citizens of Serbia, Luxembourg, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Portugal, Belgium, and Poland were also affected.
Crans-Montana is a well-known alpine resort and a regular host of international skiing competitions. While Le Constellation bar is reported to be at least 40 years old and not considered a luxury venue, it sits within an affluent resort area that previously hosted World Cup skiing events in the 1980s.
As investigations continue, Swiss authorities have pledged a thorough review to determine accountability and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
