Pakistani freelancers earned $557 million in foreign exchange during the first half of 2025-26. This marks a 58% increase from $352 million in the same period last year. According to the Pakistan Freelancers Association (Pafla), Pakistanโs digital workforce is gaining strong recognition globally.
Moreover, Pafla said, โPakistan is emerging as a global hub for freelancing services. These include software development, digital marketing, graphic design, content creation, and e-commerce.โ In addition, government and private sector initiatives have supported growth through training, skill-building, and creating a strong ecosystem for freelancers.
Government Initiatives Boost Freelancing
Meanwhile, Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, said the government is taking proactive steps to help freelancers. โWe are improving digital infrastructure, expanding affordable broadband, simplifying digital payments, and offering targeted training programs,โ she said.
Furthermore, freelancers can now retain up to 50% of their earnings in U.S. dollars. Also, those registered with the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) pay only 0.25% in taxes. These reforms encourage formal participation and allow freelancers to access international markets efficiently.
In addition, Khawaja highlighted public-private partnerships that support freelancers. As a result, the sector can grow, contribute more to national exports, and integrate better into the formal economy.
Digital Economy and Gig Sector Expand
Overall, experts say the growth reflects Pakistanโs expanding digital economy. Increasing internet access, wider use of digital payments, and focused training programs have strengthened the freelancing sector.
Moreover, private platforms are helping freelancers reach global clients. Consequently, analysts predict Pakistan could become a major global provider of freelance services within the next five years.
Finally, Pafla stressed Pakistanโs talent potential. They also urged continued support through improved training, digital infrastructure, and legal frameworks. In turn, these measures will enable freelancers to expand their contribution to the economy.
