Thomas Pritzker stepped down as executive chairman of Hyatt Hotels after US authorities released emails linking him to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The disclosure came as part of millions of files published by the US Justice Department, intensifying scrutiny of Epsteinโs connections with influential figures.
In a statement, the billionaire heir admitted he exercised poor judgment in maintaining contact with Epstein and longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year prison term for sex trafficking crimes. Pritzker expressed regret and condemned the harm caused by both individuals. However, he denied allegations made by accuser Virginia Giuffre, who named him in a 2016 deposition. He has not been charged with any crimes, and her claims never resulted in criminal proceedings.
The Justice Department released more than three million documents, photos and videos tied to the Epstein investigation. The files include names cited by Giuffre, one of the earliest and most vocal critics of Epstein. She died by suicide in Australia in 2025.
Emails spark backlash over tone and content
Newly surfaced emails between Pritzker and Epstein have triggered widespread outrage. In a 2011 message, Pritzker described being in a remote Afghan valley and referenced travel facilitated by then-US commander David Petraeus. Critics argue the wording raised concerns given Epsteinโs history.
Other exchanges from 2018 show Epstein asking Pritzker to assist a woman traveling in Asia, with Pritzker responding casually. In a separate email thread discussing allegations against architect Richard Meier, both men appeared to treat misconduct claims flippantly, further fuelling criticism.
The revelations have added pressure on business and political elites linked to Epstein as investigations and public scrutiny continue to expand.
