ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Attaullah Tarar took notice after journalist Benazir Shah reported that an account he followed on X had produced an AI-generated video of her. He stated that no one had the right to create fake videos or attempt to harass journalists through defamation. His response came after Benazir Shah shared the details on her social media account on Sunday.
Ms. Shah said that an account followed by Tarar had created an AI-generated video of her. She added that attacks would not silence journalists, and she linked her post to the video in question. PakVovals shared the video, showing Benazir Shah dancing in a London club. The journalist rejected the claim and highlighted the dangerous trend of deepfake misuse.
Tarar Assures Action
Tarar responded on Sunday night, calling the incident unacceptable. He said that nobody had the right to create or circulate fake videos. He emphasised that defaming journalists through such tactics represented a serious offense. He clarified that he followed more than 1,900 accounts and did not support the behaviour of the account that posted the video. He assured Shah that action would be taken.
His statement gained significant attention and encouraged wider discussion on the growing misuse of AI-generated content. Many journalists expressed support for Shah and demanded accountability.
Journalists Condemn Deepfakes and Demand Accountability
Journalist Zahid Gishkori described the video as a deepfake and called it a criminal act. He urged authorities to investigate the matter and bring the responsible individuals to court. He praised Shah for her commitment to facts, neutrality, and truth.
Journalist Asad Ali Toor also condemned the video. He said the person shown in the clip was not Shah and added that the account behind the video appeared to support the PML-N. He called the campaign shameful and highlighted the broader trend of online attacks against critics.
Journalist Meher Bokhari commented on the incident and linked it to the harassment of Shahzeb Khanzada in a separate episode. She said the country must uphold respect and integrity despite growing political tension. She stressed that journalists continued working under pressure and deserved protection against targeted attacks. She urged the public to maintain core values even during difficult times.
