The 2025 Asia Cup trophy controversy has escalated into a political crisis for the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). Reports suggest that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing a no-confidence motion against ACC President Mohsin Naqvi. The motion, if tabled, could threaten Naqvi’s leadership and split member nations further.
Trophy Dispute Deepens
The row began after India defeated Pakistan in the Asia Cup final but refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi. The silverware remains locked at the ACC headquarters in Dubai after the Indian team, led by Suryakumar Yadav, skipped the presentation. Naqvi insisted he was ready to present the trophy but maintained that India must formally collect it.
Rival Blocs Emerge Within ACC
The standoff has divided member nations into rival blocs. Sri Lanka has reportedly aligned with India, while Bangladesh has sided with Pakistan. Afghanistan, which often shifts its stance, holds the decisive vote that could determine Naqvi’s fate. Sources indicate the upcoming council session could be the most heated in years.
Naqvi Rejects “Fabricated Nonsense”
Responding to Indian media claims that he had apologised, Naqvi strongly rejected the reports. Posting on X, he said: “Indian media thrives on lies, not facts. I have never apologised to the BCCI nor will I ever do so.” He reiterated that India is welcome to collect the trophy directly from the ACC office if it wishes.
Relations Reach Historic Low
The Asia Cup controversy has worsened already strained relations between India and Pakistan. Earlier in the tournament, Indian players refused to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts. Captains also skipped a traditional pre-final photo session. During a recent ACC meeting, BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla demanded the trophy be handed directly to India. Naqvi refused, stressing that the matter was not on the meeting agenda.
