DHAKA: Bangladesh has signed a government-to-government agreement with China to locally manufacture drones, a move that would enhance security surveillance and target the enemies of the country.
The Inter Services Public Relations of Bangladesh confirmed the landmark deal, saying both countries finalised the agreement under an official bilateral framework, signalling a deepening of defence and technology cooperation. The deal covers drone production, the establishment of assembly facilities, and the transfer of advanced technology to Bangladesh.
Defence cooperation expands with technology transfer
Under the agreement, the Bangladesh Air Force and CETC International will jointly establish state-of-the-art drone manufacturing and assembly facilities inside Bangladesh. Officials said the project will focus on technology transfer, capacity building, and the enhancement of industrial skills. As a result, Bangladesh aims to achieve long-term self-reliance in drone development and production. Moreover, the partnership will promote joint technical cooperation and strengthen domestic expertise in advanced aerospace systems.
In the initial phase, the Bangladesh Air Force will gain the capability to produce and assemble several types of drones, including Medium Altitude Long Endurance drones and Vertical Take-Off and Landing platforms. This capability will allow Bangladesh not only to assemble foreign-designed systems but also to gradually move towards indigenous innovation. Consequently, defence planners see the project as a strategic investment in the countryโs future military and technological independence.
Drones to support defence and civilian missions
Officials emphasised that the drones will support both military and civilian purposes. The platforms will enhance surveillance, border monitoring and operational readiness for defence forces. At the same time, authorities plan to deploy the drones for humanitarian assistance and disaster response, particularly during floods, cyclones and other natural emergencies. This dual-use approach reflects the governmentโs effort to balance security priorities with public service needs.
The agreement marks a significant milestone in Bangladesh-China defence cooperation and signals a new phase in regional technological competition.
