Authorities Recover Gold Coins, Bars and Jewellery
Bangladesh’s anti-corruption authorities have seized almost 10 kilograms of gold from bank lockers belonging to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina. The gold, valued at around $1.3 million, was recovered after officials from the Central Intelligence Cell (CIC) of the National Board of Revenue opened the sealed lockers on Wednesday.
The CIC said the lockers were first seized in September. A court order later allowed investigators to access them. Inside, authorities found approximately 9.7 kilograms of gold, including coins, bars, and jewellery. A senior CIC official confirmed the discovery while speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity.
Investigators allege that Hasina failed to deposit several expensive gifts she received during her tenure into the state treasury — known as the Toshakhana — as required under Bangladeshi law. The National Board of Revenue is also assessing whether she declared the gold in her tax records.
Political Turmoil Deepens as Legal Pressure Mounts
The recovery of the gold comes at a time when Bangladesh is facing escalating political unrest following the end of Sheikh Hasina’s long rule. Tensions continue to rise ahead of crucial national elections scheduled for February 2026.
Earlier this month, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Hasina to death over a deadly crackdown on a student-led uprising. The United Nations has reported that up to 1,400 people were killed during the crackdown as Hasina struggled to maintain her grip on power.
The latest investigation adds to the mounting legal troubles surrounding the former prime minister. Authorities say the Toshakhana violations, possible tax evasion, and the discovery of undeclared gold could deepen the ongoing cases against her.
The situation continues to evolve, with Bangladesh’s political climate marked by uncertainty, street protests, and intense scrutiny of former government officials.
