Moon Sightings Point to February Ramadan Start
Astronomers have announced the expected dates for major Islamic occasions in 2026, including Ramadan, Eidul Fitr, and Eidul Adha, based on astronomical calculations. According to experts, the moon signaling the start of Ramadan is likely to be sighted in Pakistan on 18 February. As a result, they expect the first fast of the holy month to be observed on 19 February across most parts of the country.
Moreover, specialists predict that the Shawwal moon will be visible on 20 March. Consequently, Muslims in Pakistan are likely to celebrate Eidul Fitr on 21 March, marking the end of Ramadan. Experts clarified that these projections rely on scientific models and long-term lunar data. However, they also noted that final confirmation will depend on the official moon sighting process conducted closer to the dates.
Eidul Adha and Annual Holidays Announced
In addition, astronomers expect the Islamic month of Zilhaj to begin on 17 May. Based on this timeline, Eidul Adha is likely to be observed on 27 May in Pakistan. Experts emphasized that while calculations provide strong indications, slight variations may still occur due to weather conditions and visibility differences during moon sightings.
Meanwhile, the Government of Pakistan has released the full schedule of public holidays for 2026. According to official estimates, the country will observe around 17 public holidays throughout the year. These include Kashmir Day, Pakistan Day, Labour Day, Independence Day, Eid Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH), Iqbal Day, Quaid-e-Azam Day, and Christmas, along with both Eidul Fitr and Eidul Adha.
Furthermore, officials highlighted that religious holidays linked to the lunar calendar could shift by a day depending on moon sighting outcomes. Nevertheless, the advance schedule aims to help institutions, businesses, and citizens plan ahead for the coming year.
