The ninth Gwadar Book Fair, organized by the Rural Community Development Council, commenced on Friday and will run until Sunday, drawing attention to Balochi literature and pressing social issues.
The event was inaugurated by Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund Chairman Mohammad Tahseen, Gwadar Deputy Commissioner Hamoodur Rehman, and former MPA Mir Hammal Kalmati. To mark the birth anniversary of renowned Balochi poet Atta Shad, a special song inspired by his poetry was performed.
Gwadar University Vice Chancellor Abdul Razzaq Sabir emphasized the importance of the fair in promoting a culture of reading and intellectual engagement, stating that “nations that prioritize books and learning pave the way for progress.”
The opening day featured a theatre performance by Khairjan Art Academy, highlighting local socio-economic challenges, followed by a session led by Dr. Ammar Ali Jan on ‘The Changing Global System and Balochistan.’
Folk singers Younus and Digde Baloch are set to perform at the festival, adding a cultural dimension to the literary celebration.
Discussions also explored the effects of climate change on marginalized communities, with contributions from Mohammad Tahseen and Dr. Ammar. The issue of environmental sustainability was highlighted as a growing concern for coastal and rural populations.
The fair hosted the launch of Gulzar Gichki’s book Zahirook, accompanied by insights from the author and musical performances by singer Naseeb Mazar and musician Ustad Baqi.
A major highlight of the event was the presentation of a Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Fazal Khaliq for his contributions to Balochi language and literature. His session with AR Dad further underscored the significance of preserving and advancing regional literature.
Attracting students, educators, and literature enthusiasts, the book fair has become a key platform for intellectual exchange and cultural celebration. The event will continue for the next two days, offering more discussions, performances, and book launches.
