Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti announced on Monday that Pakistani security forces thwarted a major terror plot by arresting Professor Dr. Usman Qazi, a senior member of the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA).
Speaking at a press conference in Quetta alongside senior officials, Bugti said Qazi had helped plan multiple suicide bombings targeting innocent citizens on August 14. “Our security forces foiled this conspiracy and arrested the bombers in time,” he stated, praising the Counter-Terrorism Department, police, and other agencies for preventing a major tragedy.
Bugti highlighted the significance of the arrest, noting that it was the first time an official of the BLA’s Majeed Brigade had been captured. “He is a lecturer in Pakistan Studies. Imagine how many children he must have influenced. This man even sheltered and treated terrorists at his home,” the CM alleged.
Authorities also played a recorded statement of the suspect, who admitted completing his Master’s at Quaid-e-Azam University and a PhD at the University of Peshawar, serving as a Grade-18 lecturer. He revealed that his wife is also a government employee.
In his confession, Qazi said he was recruited in 2020 through contacts he met at Quaid-e-Azam University, with links later developed via the encrypted app Telegram. He admitted to facilitating three operations for the group after relocating to Quetta.
