ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s top military leaders marked the 54th martyrdom anniversary of Major Shabbir Sharif with solemn tributes. Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir led the remembrance on behalf of the armed forces.
Admiral Naveed Ashraf and Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu joined the commemoration.

Major Shabbir Sharif earned the Sitara-e-Jurat for gallantry during the 1965 War. He again distinguished himself during the 1971 conflict.
The ISPR described his mission as essential to Pakistan’s operational objectives. He was assigned the task of securing a critical position near the Sulemanki Headworks. He led the assault with determination and unwavering resolve.
On the night of December 5-6, he engaged enemy forces at close quarters. He eliminated Major Narain Singh, commander of the attacking Indian unit. His leadership strengthened the morale of his troops during intense combat.
Throughout December 6, he repelled several enemy counterattacks. He used a recoilless rifle to disable advancing tanks. His actions demonstrated exceptional battlefield skill and personal fearlessness. He embraced martyrdom after an Indian tank round struck his position.
