ISLAMABAD: In a landmark development for Pakistan’s higher education landscape, Arizona State University (ASU) has officially partnered with Pakistan to launch the National Institute of Technology (NIT)—its first physical campus in Lahore and the first-ever U.S. university campus in the country.
Scheduled to begin classes in Fall 2025, NIT will house two academic schools: the School of Management Sciences and the School of Data Sciences and Information Technology. The curriculum will align with ASU’s American academic standards while integrating local cultural and educational values.
The initiative is spearheaded by Shahzeb Awan, a University of London-trained lawyer, and Jahanzeb Burana, a Harvard-educated finance professional. A formal agreement was signed in April 2025 at ASU’s Tempe campus in Arizona.
ASU officials emphasized that NIT will offer an empowering educational experience aimed at preparing students for success in the global job market. One of the standout features of the program is a dual-degree pathway, enabling students to earn both ASU and NIT degrees simultaneously.
In addition, students will gain access to international academic opportunities, including study abroad programs at ASU’s campuses in Washington D.C., California, and through the ASU-Cintana Alliance, which partners with over 30 institutions worldwide.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised the initiative as a “milestone” in Pakistan’s education sector, stating that NIT would become “a world-class institution that allows our youth to succeed in global markets.”
The Lahore campus will feature cutting-edge labs, innovation hubs, and incubators to support entrepreneurship, sustainability, and green technology research. In line with its mission of inclusive education, NIT will reserve 30% of its seats for students from underprivileged backgrounds through need-based scholarships.
The launch of ASU’s Pakistan campus is expected to open new avenues for academic excellence, boost employment prospects, and enhance Pakistan’s global academic standing.
