Actress Says She “Does Not Recognize” Her Country Amid Rising Divisions
Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie addressed the ongoing free speech debate during an appearance at a Spanish film festival over the weekend. She was asked, “What do you fear as an artist and as an American?”
“It is a very difficult question,” Jolie responded, according to The Guardian. “I love my country, but at this time, I don’t recognize my country.”
Jolie explained that her perspective has always been shaped by an international life. “I’ve always lived internationally. My family is international, my friends, my life,” she said.
She stressed her belief in equality and unity. “My worldview is equal, united, and international. I believe that anything that divides or limits people’s personal expressions and freedoms is extremely dangerous.”
The actress also urged caution in how people engage in public debates. “These are such serious times that we have to be careful not to say things casually,” she warned. “These are very, very heavy times we are living in together.”
Her remarks follow heightened tensions in the U.S. over freedom of expression. Recently, ABC pulled Jimmy Kimmel’s late-night show indefinitely after controversy surrounding his comments about Charlie Kirk’s death.
Jolie attended the festival to premiere her upcoming film Couture.
