Amazon announced it will close its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores as the company shifts its grocery strategy toward faster delivery and greater investment in Whole Foods Market.
In a company news release, Amazon said the decision comes after reviewing its Amazon-branded grocery stores. While the company saw โencouraging signals,โ it has not yet found a scalable model that balances customer experience and profitability. Some of the closing locations will be converted into Whole Foods Market stores, and customers can still shop Amazon Fresh online in areas where delivery is available.
The move aligns with Amazonโs push into grocery delivery, which the company says is seeing strong customer demand. Amazon now delivers groceries in over 5,000 U.S. cities and towns, including via Same-Day Delivery, which began offering fresh and frozen foods in 2025. Sales of perishables through this service have grown sharply, and Amazon plans to expand same-day grocery delivery to even more communities in 2026.
Amazon is also increasing its investment in Whole Foods Market, which it acquired in 2017. Whole Foods has grown to over 550 locations, with notable sales and traffic gains. The company plans to open more than 100 new Whole Foods stores in the coming years, including additional locations of its smaller Whole Foods Market Daily Shop format.
Amazonโs move signals a clear pivot away from experimental brick-and-mortar stores toward delivery-focused operations and its more established Whole Foods brand, reflecting changing consumer preferences in grocery shopping.
