Alia Soomro, Pakistan’s first female international boxing champion from Lyari, has strongly denied claims that she falsely identified herself as a world champion. In a recent video statement, Soomro clarified that she never claimed such a title but had indeed won an international tournament while representing Pakistan abroad.
“I have proudly represented my country in international boxing events,” she said. “Now, a malicious propaganda campaign is being spread to defame me and discredit my achievements.”
She alleged that a specific group of individuals—driven by bias and outdated thinking—are behind the smear campaign. According to Soomro, these critics are labeling professional boxing as “fake” simply because they find it difficult to accept a woman’s success in the sport.
“These are the same people who believe women belong only in the kitchen—but they are wrong,” she declared, adding that their resistance only highlights the gender stereotypes still deeply rooted in society.
The boxer, hailing from a humble background in Karachi’s Lyari area—a locality known for producing sports talent—has become a symbol of resilience and determination for young women in Pakistan. Her international success and refusal to be silenced have inspired many aspiring female athletes across the country.
Recently, Alia Soomro was honored with a commemorative shield for her remarkable achievement, recognizing her as a trailblazer in Pakistan’s sports landscape.
Despite facing social backlash and media scrutiny, Soomro remains resolute in defending her record and continuing her career. She urged the public not to fall for false narratives and reaffirmed her commitment to representing Pakistan with dignity and pride.
