ISLAMABAD – Aleema Khan, sister of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has criticized the judicial process as deeply flawed after a Supreme Court hearing regarding her brother’s bail petition lasted only 30 seconds before being adjourned until August 12.
Speaking to private media outside the Supreme Court, Aleema expressed frustration over the brief and seemingly procedural hearing. “This isn’t an open trial. It’s not even fulfilling the basic requirements of justice. We just want a fair trial,” she said.
Aleema revealed that the defense counsel Salman Safdar was abroad, which led them to expect a delay. However, senior lawyer Salman Akram Raja appeared on behalf of Khan. Despite his presence, the court adjourned the session within moments without hearing any arguments.
She also pointed out the court had granted formal permission for a family meeting with Imran Khan on the same day, along with a scheduled Toshakhana case hearing. Still, she claimed the Adiala jail authorities continued to restrict access to Khan’s legal team and family members, in defiance of the judge’s instructions.
Highlighting what she called unequal treatment, Aleema alleged that during earlier proceedings, up to 20 people from the prosecution — including 12 lawyers — were allowed, whereas only one defense lawyer was permitted, raising serious questions about transparency and fairness.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has officially postponed the hearing of Khan’s bail petitions related to the May 9 riots. The two-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, accepted the defense’s request for delay. No arguments were presented during the hearing.
Imran Khan faces multiple charges stemming from violent protests following his arrest on May 9, including incitement to violence, vandalism, and attacks on military and public buildings.
