The global aviation industry has tightened restrictions on personal electronic devices (PEDs) amid increasing concerns over overheating lithium batteries, which have caused fires mid-air and at airports.
Airlines Ban Bluetooth Earphones in Checked Baggage
Three airlines recently banned Bluetooth earphones in checked baggage, citing safety concerns. These devices remain active even when not in use, violating safety rules that require all lithium battery-powered items to be switched off when stored in checked luggage.
Recent Lithium Battery Fire Incidents
Two major incidents highlighted the dangers of lithium batteries. At Melbourne International Airport, a power bank exploded, setting a passengerโs clothes on fire and forcing the evacuation of 150 travellers from the Qantas business lounge. In another case, an Air China flight made an emergency landing after a lithium battery in an overhead compartment caught fire mid-air.
Emirates, Etihad, and Flydubai Implement Stricter Measures
Emirates Airlines banned the use of power banks on board flights. Etihad, Emirates, and Flydubai have issued detailed guidelines limiting the transport of lithium batteries, power banks, e-cigarettes, and drones.
-
Power banks and e-cigarettes are allowed only in cabin baggage and must remain switched off.
-
Drones must have removable batteries not exceeding 160Wh, and may not be operated at airports or during flights.
-
Etihad prohibits certain Apple MacBook Pro models in checked luggage due to safety recalls.
Passenger Guidelines for Safer Air Travel
Dubai Airport limits travellers to carrying 15 mobile phones in their luggage, while hairstyling tools with hydrocarbon gas are restricted to one per passenger.
