Lucknow — An Air India Express flight avoided a potential disaster after crew members detected smoke midair and diverted the aircraft for an emergency landing in Lucknow, Indian media reported on Wednesday.
Flight IX1523, operated by an Airbus A320, was en route to Delhi when the crew identified smoke in the avionics bay. Consequently, the pilot issued a Mayday call, signaling a life-threatening emergency and requesting immediate landing clearance.
Crew Responds Swiftly to In-Flight Emergency
Meanwhile, air traffic control in Lucknow responded promptly after receiving the distress signal. Authorities cleared the aircraft for priority landing, and the plane touched down safely at approximately 5:18 pm on Monday.
The aircraft carried 148 individuals, including six crew members. Following the landing, officials evacuated all passengers without incident. Emergency protocols ensured that no injuries were reported, and the situation remained under control throughout the response.
Airline Ensures Passenger Safety and Arrangements
Furthermore, the airline emphasized that safety remained its top priority during the incident. In a statement, the carrier confirmed that the crew acted in accordance with standard operating procedures after detecting the smoke alert.
Passengers received refreshments upon arrival, and the airline arranged alternative flights to transport them to Delhi. Additionally, technical teams initiated inspections to determine the cause of the smoke in the avionics compartment.
