ISLAMABAD: The superintendent of Adiala Jail has firmly rejected allegations that PTI founder Imran Khan is operating his X account from inside the prison. In a written reply submitted to the Islamabad High Court on Tuesday, the official stated that the former prime minister remains under strict surveillance and has no access to any prohibited communication device.
According to the superintendent, mobile signal jammers installed inside the facility and surrounding areas make the use of phones or internet services impossible for inmates. He emphasised that Mr Khan is not permitted to engage in political discussions under jail rules, although some visitors reportedly attempt to initiate such conversations during meetings.
The official noted that political instructions previously attributed to the incarcerated leader had contributed to public unrest, but maintained that such communication is no longer possible. He stressed that the X account associated with Mr Khan is being operated from outside the prison, adding that the PTI founder receives only routine facilities allowed under jail regulations.
The response came after a petition filed by Ghulam Murtaza through Barrister Zafarullah, alleging that Mr Khan continues to issue provocative messages from his social media account despite being in custody. The Islamabad High Court had sought an explanation from the jail administration over the claim.
Meanwhile, a district and sessions court in Islamabad extended the pre-arrest bail of Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, until December 23 in several cases, including those linked to the May 9 violence. The court also ordered that both remain protected from arrest until the next hearing.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majoka presided over the proceedings. Arguments on Mr Khan’s bail applications could not be presented due to his absence, prompting the judge to direct that he appear either in person or via video link at the next hearing. The court then adjourned the proceedings until December 23.
