Abu Yasar al-Turki
Turkish authorities have confirmed the arrest of Abu Yasar al-Turki, one of the most wanted figures linked to the militant group Daesh (ISIS), in a significant development made possible through close cooperation with Pakistani security agencies.
According to Turkish media reports released on Sunday, the arrest marks a major breakthrough in the ongoing fight against transnational terrorism, particularly in the region spanning South and Central Asia.
Abu Yasar, known for his operational leadership within Daesh, was reportedly captured near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, where he had been hiding for an extended period.
Turkish intelligence had been pursuing him for years due to his alleged involvement in orchestrating terrorist attacks targeting music concerts and civilian gatherings in Turkey. He is also accused of playing a key logistical role in facilitating the movement of foreign fighters from Europe to Afghanistan, helping to strengthen Daesh’s foothold in the region.
The arrest is being hailed as a testament to the growing collaboration between Pakistani and Turkish intelligence communities. Turkish media outlets have described the operation as a major blow to Daesh’s regional infrastructure and praised the effectiveness of the intelligence-sharing mechanisms between the two countries.
The operation reportedly involved months of surveillance and coordination, ultimately leading to the successful detention of the militant leader.
This development follows closely on the heels of another high-profile arrest carried out by Pakistani authorities earlier this year. In March 2025, Pakistan apprehended Mohammad Sharifullah, a senior Daesh commander identified by the United States as the mastermind behind the 2021 Abbey Gate bombing at Kabul airport, which killed scores of civilians and U.S. personnel during the American withdrawal from Afghanistan.
That arrest was publicly acknowledged by U.S. President Donald Trump during a congressional address, where he thanked Pakistan for its decisive action.
Security analysts view these consecutive operations as a clear indication of Pakistan’s increasingly proactive role in international counterterrorism efforts.
Experts argue that Islamabad is not only dismantling extremist networks within its borders but is also proving to be a reliable partner for regional and global intelligence agencies working to curb the spread of terrorism. These arrests have further bolstered Pakistan’s image as a key player in maintaining regional security and stability.
