The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a forecast for the country’s first major monsoon spell, expected to begin on June 20 and continue through June 23, bringing widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across various regions.
According to the Met Office, seasonal monsoon currents are advancing into northern Pakistan, triggering showers in major urban centers such as Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Peshawar, Swat, Abbottabad, and surrounding areas. These rains are likely to offer temporary respite from the ongoing heatwave affecting large parts of the country.
Southern regions, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Badin, Tharparkar, and Khuzdar, are also expected to receive light to moderate showers during the same period. A more intense spell of rain with strong winds is forecast for June 22–24 in Sukkur, Larkana, Dadu, and Jacobabad.
The PMD has cautioned about possible water accumulation in low-lying areas, especially in urban zones, due to heavy rainfall.
Emergency services and local authorities have been advised to stay alert and implement preventive measures to manage potential flooding or disruption. Meanwhile, citizens are urged to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel during thunderstorms, and follow safety advisories during the wet weather conditions.
