The United Kingdom has introduced a graduate visa that allows students to stay in the UK for at least two years after completing their studies.
Eligible students include those currently residing in the UK with a student visa or Tier 4 (general) student visa, who have completed a UK bachelor’s degree, postgraduate degree, or another qualifying course, or whose education provider has confirmed their graduation.
The graduate visa lasts approximately two years, but students with a PhD or other doctoral qualifications can stay for about three years.
While the graduate visa cannot be extended, individuals may switch to a different visa category, such as a skilled worker visa. Applications must be submitted before the current student or Tier 4 (general) student visa expires.
Applicants can apply as soon as their educational institution informs the Home Office of their degree completion. It is not necessary to wait until graduation or receiving the degree certificate.
The application process requires specific documentation, and decisions are typically made within eight weeks. The application fee is £822, and an annual healthcare surcharge of £1,035 applies.
Healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and those working in health or adult social care, should consider the Health and Care Worker visa, as they might be eligible for a healthcare surcharge refund if already paid.
