Sydney Sweeney chooses to take on a demanding role in a biographical film centered around sports.
In her next project, Sydney Sweeney opted for a bold and challenging role by agreeing to portray the boxer Christy Martin in a biopic. Alongside her starring role, the Euphoria star will also take on the responsibilities of a producer in the film.
In preparation for the demanding role, Sydney stated, “I trained in grappling and kickboxing from ages 12 to 19. I’ve been eager to return to the ring, train, and undergo a physical transformation.”
She emphasized, “Christy’s narrative is not a light one; it’s both physically and emotionally taxing, carrying significant weight. Yet, I relish in challenging myself.”
“Christy Martin not only brought legitimacy to female boxing, but she also challenged gender stereotypes and persevered through emotional, physical, and financial hardships,” Sydney expressed.
Regarded as one of the most legendary female boxers in the United States, director David Michôd described the film as “centered around Christy as a young gay woman in small-town Virginia during the 1990s.”
He elaborated, stating, “Coming from a relatively conservative background, she faced restrictions on expressing her true self, prompting her to turn to boxing as a means of both self-expression and venting her frustrations.”
