Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) announced on Thursday the suspension of flight operations to Dubai and Sharjah as heavy rains battered the United Arab Emirates (UAE) once again. The national flag carrier cited the adverse weather conditions as the reason behind the disruption.
In a released statement, PIA highlighted the significant impact of the inclement weather on flight operations to these two key destinations. The suspension, affecting not only PIA but all airlines, will persist until further notice, according to the airline.
The UAE authorities have issued an orange alert in response to the “unstable” weather conditions prevailing in the region. With forecasts predicting the peak of this weather disturbance to occur between May 2nd and May 3rd, precautionary measures have been enacted across various sectors.
Schools have transitioned to distance learning, companies have encouraged remote work arrangements, and recreational areas such as parks and beaches have been closed to the public. The aviation sector, including airports and airlines, is also bracing for the impact of the weather phenomenon.
While the current spell of rains is anticipated to be less severe compared to the unprecedented downpour earlier in the month, the public is urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
The adverse weather conditions have also affected flights operated by UAE carriers such as Emirates, Etihad Airways, flydubai, and Air Arabia. Reports from Gulf News indicate that these airlines have experienced delays, cancellations, and diversions due to the challenging weather conditions. Emirates, Dubai’s flagship carrier, has notably cancelled flights to several destinations including Istanbul, Nairobi, Cairo, Amman, Singapore, and Johannesburg.
