China has initiated the maiden deployment of the first Hangor class submarine crafted for Pakistan

China’s Wuhan was the venue for the inaugural ceremony of the first Hangor-class submarine constructed for the Pakistan Navy.

Admiral Naveed Ashraf, Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), graced the occasion at the Shuangliu Base of Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group (WSIG).

In his address, Admiral Ashraf underscored the paramount importance of maritime security amidst the prevailing geostrategic dynamics in the region. He emphasized the Pakistan Navy’s steadfast commitment to fostering a secure and conducive maritime environment for all stakeholders.

He noted that the advanced armaments and sensors equipped on the Hangor-class submarines will play a pivotal role in upholding regional peace and security.

Expressing contentment with the project’s progress, Admiral Ashraf commended the relentless efforts of China Shipbuilding and Offshore International Company Ltd. (CSOC). He hailed the initiative as a testament to the enduring friendship between China and Pakistan.

The agreement for the acquisition of eight Hangor-class submarines was signed during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Pakistan.

Under this agreement, four submarines will be constructed in China, while the remaining four will be built at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works Ltd (KS&EW) in Pakistan under a Transfer of Technology (ToT) arrangement.

These submarines will be outfitted with state-of-the-art weaponry and sensors, enabling them to engage targets at significant distances.

The launching event was attended by dignitaries from both China and Pakistan, including representatives from China Shipbuilding and Offshore International Company Ltd. and Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group Company Ltd. Last year, the Pakistan Navy also inducted two Chinese-built Type 054 A/P frigates, further strengthening maritime capabilities.
