Rana Sanaullah Hints at Nawaz Sharif’s Potential Return as Party Leader Following Legal Clearance

LAHORE: Rana Sanaullah, the President of the Punjab chapter of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), has hinted at Nawaz Sharif’s potential return as the leader of the ruling party. This statement comes after Nawaz Sharif was cleared by both the courts and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) of various charges that were filed against him.

Speaking to journalists in Lahore after a meeting of the party’s leadership, Rana Sanaullah affirmed, “Nawaz Sharif will lead the party again. The PML-N will move forward under his leadership.” Emphasizing Nawaz Sharif’s exoneration by the courts, Sanaullah underlined the party’s readiness for his reinstatement.

Nawaz Sharif’s political journey has seen its share of ups and downs. He resigned as Prime Minister of Pakistan in 2017 following a disqualification for life by the Supreme Court due to failure to declare a receivable salary. Subsequently, in February 2018, the Supreme Court disqualified Nawaz as PML-N president, citing constitutional provisions.

However, after returning from a four-year self-imposed exile in London in October of the previous year, Nawaz Sharif’s prospects received a boost when, on January 8, 2024, the Supreme Court revoked lifetime bans on contesting elections for individuals with criminal convictions, opening the door for Nawaz to pursue political office once more.

Rana Sanaullah highlighted the PML-N’s commitment to follow Nawaz Sharif’s narrative, whether it pertains to “resistance or reconciliation.” He also addressed the party’s internal structure, stating that while the position of “Quaid” was symbolic, the operational leadership remains vested in the president.

Furthermore, Sanaullah commended the performance of the PML-N-led Punjab government, noting Maryam Nawaz’s efforts in providing relief to the masses. The party’s leadership expressed satisfaction with the performance of Prime Minister Shehbaz and Punjab CM Maryam, signaling unity and support within the party ranks.
