Madhubala, the Elephant, to Relocate to Safari Park Next Month

Madhubala

After enduring solitary confinement at Karachi Zoo, Madhubala, the 16-year-old elephant in Pakistan, is slated for a much-anticipated relocation to Safari Park, as announced by the zoo administration on Thursday.

The upcoming move marks the culmination of extensive preparations by the zoo authorities. Madhubala will bid farewell to her solitary existence and reunite with her fellow elephants, Sonia and Malika, upon her arrival at Safari Park next month.

Significant efforts have been invested in training Madhubala for her transition, including familiarizing her with entering and exiting the transportation container.

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) administration has confirmed the completion of this training phase, ensuring a smooth relocation process.

Furthermore, in collaboration with Four Paws, a renowned global animal welfare organization, a new sanctuary is being meticulously prepared for Madhubala’s arrival.

The sanctuary’s construction is progressing swiftly, with completion expected within 15 to 20 days. Once finalized, Madhubala will be transferred to Safari Park in May, where she will join her new companions.

With Madhubala’s integration into Safari Park, the elephant population at the sanctuary will reach three, fostering a more enriching environment for these majestic creatures.

Madhubala’s journey towards a better quality of life is emblematic of ongoing efforts to address the welfare of animals in captivity. In 2022, Four Paws intervened to provide medical treatment to Madhubala, along with three other African elephants in Karachi.

Suffering from a dental infection and the discomfort of a broken tusk, Madhubala’s plight garnered attention and prompted action to alleviate her suffering.

This initiative follows Four Paws’ successful relocation of Kaavan, dubbed the world’s loneliest elephant, from Islamabad to Cambodia in 2020.

The organization’s commitment to improving the lives of captive animals continues to resonate globally, exemplifying the significance of collaborative efforts in animal welfare initiatives.
