Jordan intercepted several flying objects that breached its airspace on Saturday night to safeguard its citizens, as stated by a cabinet announcement.
The incident occurred amidst Iran’s launch of explosive drones and missiles at Israel, marking its first direct attack on Israeli territory and escalating the risk of broader regional conflict.
As a buffer between Iran and Israel, Jordan had activated air defenses to intercept any unauthorized drones or missiles entering its airspace, according to two regional security sources.
The cabinet statement clarified that while some shrapnel landed in various locations during the incident, there were no reports of significant damage or injuries to citizens.
Additionally, it was reported by Israel’s Channel that US and British warplanes participated in intercepting some of the drones en route to Israel over the Iraq-Syria border area.
Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak delivered a grave assessment, confirming the successful neutralization of Iranian drones by British military jets amid Iranโs hostile actions towards Israel. Sunak emphasized the critical need for restraint to avert further escalation, urging for calm and prudent navigation through the intricate geopolitical landscape.
Highlighting the potential fallout of a successful attack, Sunak reiterated the UKโs steadfast commitment to Israelโs security and the broader stability of the region, underscoring its inherent connection to national security interests.
Scheduled to engage in discussions with Group of Seven leaders, Sunak stressed the importance of coordinated efforts among allies to navigate the evolving crisis judiciously.
The extensive assault by Iran, marked by a barrage of drones and missiles, reportedly stemmed from an Israeli incursion into the Iranian consulate in Syria. Amid simmering tensions, exacerbated by Israelโs enduring conflict with Gaza and ongoing issues with Lebanon and Syria, the situation remained precarious.
Although the Israeli military successfully intercepted over 99 percent of the Iranian assault, with assistance from France, the UK, and the US, the attacks triggered air raid sirens and explosions across Israeli cities, including Tel Aviv, illustrating the severity of the situation.
While casualties were minimal, with one girl sustaining injuries from intercepted drone shrapnel, the attacks caused minor damage to Israeli military infrastructure. Originating from Iran, Iraq, and Yemen, the multifaceted assault underscored the expansive reach of the conflict and the intricate complexities involved in its resolution.
