Carlos Alcaraz, a tennis player, has declared that he will not participate in the Monte Carlo Masters tournament because of a right forearm injury.
On Tuesday, he shared in a social media update his feelings of disappointment, mentioning that despite his attempts to recover from a damaged pronator teres muscle in his right arm during training in Monte Carlo, he is unable to participate in the competition.
The 20-year-old Spanish player, who previously competed in Miami and experienced a loss against Grigor Dimitrov, was scheduled to play against Felix Auger-Aliassime in the second round on Wednesday.
Nevertheless, Alcaraz’s absence has opened an opportunity for Italian player Lorenzo Sonego, who joins as a fortunate replacement, as reported by the ATP.
The former world number one and two-time Grand Slam champion, who is also a two-time Monte Carlo Masters participant without a win, expressed his disappointment and said, “I was truly excited to competeโฆ I’ll see you next year!”
In 2022, following a tiring American tour that saw him reach the semi-finals in Indian Wells and win in Miami, Alcaraz experienced a setback in his initial match against Sebastian Korda. The previous year, he pulled out from the competition right before it began.
On the third day, Alcaraz eventually confirmed his withdrawal, which was expected due to his subpar performance in recent training sessions.
His injury exacerbates the challenges faced by Spanish tennis, as it follows Rafael Nadal’s withdrawal the previous week. Nevertheless, there’s optimism for Nadal’s potential comeback at the Barcelona Open.
Alcaraz is now in a hurry to regain his strength for the Barcelona Open, an event where he intends to maintain his victory run on the Catalan clay courts.
