A massive disruption affects both WhatsApp and Instagram, which are owned by Meta

A surge of annoyance swept through the digital environment, as users globally encountered access restrictions on Meta-owned platforms, WhatsApp and Instagram, late on a Wednesday night.

Beginning at approximately 11:45 pm Indian Standard Time, a widespread outage took place, causing confusion among millions of users who faced error messages stating that the services were unavailable.

Users attempting to open the apps or access the WhatsApp web version encountered an unfortunate scene – a straightforward message declaring, “Service temporarily unavailable.”

On Instagram, users encountered difficulties in refreshing their feeds or keeping up with the latest stories, resulting in a disconnected and empty online experience.

Downdetector, a reliable monitor of web issues, noted a substantial increase in complaints from users experiencing difficulties with unavailable platforms.

This event represents the second significant outage impacting Meta-owned platforms this year, raising concerns about the dependability of these massive digital entities.

Echoes of dissatisfaction persist from March, as Instagram, Facebook, and Threads experienced similar technical issues that bound them together.

People shared stories of being suddenly logged out of their accounts, with some ending up stranded and unable to regain access. Those who had enabled two-factor authentication faced additional challenges as they tried to obtain login codes, further intensifying their irritation.

As the digital community faces another disruption due to a blackout, concerns arise about Meta’s capacity to strengthen its platforms and prevent these recurring issues.

As reliance on communication channels reaches unprecedented levels, the effects of outages extend beyond simple inconvenience, highlighting the vulnerability of our digital infrastructure in an increasingly interconnected world.
