ISLAMABAD: New Zealand revealed their squad for an upcoming five-match T20 series against Pakistan, as several key players are tied up with the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Michael Bracewell has been entrusted with captaincy duties for the series set to commence later this month.
Bracewell, who is leading the team for the first time, has overcome setbacks from a ruptured Achilles and a broken finger since his last international appearance in March last year.
His return to form has been remarkable, highlighted by impressive performances, including his career-best figures in a recent Plunket Shield match.
The squad includes seven members from previous T20 World Cup campaigns, with Wellington’s Tim Robinson and Canterbury’s Will O’Rourke making their debut appearances in the Black Caps T20I squad.
O’Rourke showcased his talent during his debut for the test side against South Africa in February, while Robinson earned his place through exceptional performances in Wellington’s domestic Super Smash competition.
New Zealand will play three matches in Rawalpindi and two in Lahore against Pakistan from April 18, ahead of the T20 World Cup scheduled from June 1 to 29.
The absence of top-ranked NZ players like Trent Boult, Devon Conway, and others is due to their commitments to the IPL. Similarly, Will Young and Tom Latham are unavailable for selection due to other engagements.
Tim Southee, the team’s leading T20 wicket-taker, has been given time for conditioning following a busy playing schedule. Colin Munro is also unavailable.
Gary Stead will lead the support staff in Pakistan, accompanied by batting coach Luke Ronchi and bowling coach Brendon Donkers. Former England international James Foster will provide additional assistance, having previously worked with the team in the UK and India.
The squad, led by Bracewell, along with the support staff, will depart for Pakistan next Friday (April 12), with the first match scheduled in Rawalpindi on Thursday (April 18).
