ISLAMABAD: Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, a former Prime Minister known for his political acumen, stated that he did not witness any violations of the constitution by former Army Chief General (R) Qamar Javed Bajwa and former Director General (DG) Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Lt. General (R) Faiz Hameed. However, he emphasized the utmost importance of investigating any potential wrongdoings and ensuring transparency within the system.
During an interview, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi delved into a spectrum of critical issues confronting the nation, ranging from governance to international relations. Regarding the composition of the federal cabinet, Abbasi criticized the scrutiny surrounding Muhammad Aurangzeb’s appointment as Finance Minister, asserting the primacy of competence over mere party affiliation.
Advocating for robust accountability mechanisms, Abbasi called for the establishment of a truth commission to transparently unveil facts. He emphasized the imperative of accountability measures rooted firmly in the rule of law, citing instances where accountability procedures had faltered in the past.
Expressing his views on the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Abbasi suggested its closure, advocating for a system that upholds financial transparency through meticulous tax record-keeping.
Abbasi underscored the significance of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), urging for the Prime Minister’s chairmanship to ensure streamlined decision-making on economic matters.
On the subject of trade relations with India, Abbasi proposed a reevaluation of the dialogue process and emphasized the importance of providing the opposition with a platform for discussion.
Furthermore, he stressed the need to foster stronger ties with Afghanistan, recognizing the criticality of constructive dialogue between the neighboring nations.
Highlighting the sacrifices of Pakistani soldiers on the western border, Abbasi advocated for a diplomatic approach towards Afghanistan, underscoring the imperative of respecting Afghanistan’s sovereignty.
Moreover, Abbasi hinted at the potential role of Nawaz Sharif in national or provincial politics, considering his party’s current position of influence.
