PCB announces 7-Member Selection Committee Empowered with Equal Authority

LAHORE: The Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Mohsin Naqvi, has announced a new national selection committee consisting of seven members. Unlike the previous committee, there won’t be any chairman, and each member will have equal authority, as per Naqvi’s statement during a press briefing.

Naqvi emphasized that decisions moving forward would require the support of the majority of committee members. He noted that the committee’s formation took into account various factors to ensure its effectiveness.

Former cricketers Mohammad Yousuf, Wahab Riaz, Abdul Razzaq, and Asad Shafiq are part of the selection committee, along with the head coach, captain, and an analyst, Naqvi disclosed. Additionally, there will be two or three coordinators without voting rights.

Naqvi expressed confidence in this committee’s ability to make effective decisions, emphasizing their pivotal role in management. The committee’s jurisdiction extends to Under 19 cricket as well.

Regarding coaching staff, Naqvi mentioned ongoing efforts to finalize a panel. The PCB is in the final stages of establishing a comprehensive coaching setup, including both national and international coaches, to be completed within four to five days.

Naqvi also addressed Pakistan pacer Haris Rauf’s situation, mentioning the reinstatement of his central contract. Rauf clarified a misunderstanding in his letter to the board, leading to an appeal process. The PCB will cover Rauf’s injury through insurance, recognizing his importance as a key player.

Naqvi emphasized that the Uniform NOC (No Objection Certificate) policies will be enforced without exception for players.

On the matter of the team captaincy, Naqvi indicated that the selection committee will deliberate on retaining Shaheen Shah Afridi as captain or appointing a new leader.

He expressed hope for the Champions Trophy 2024 proceeding as planned, mentioning an upcoming ICC team visit to assess preparations for the tournament.

Regarding all-rounder Imad Wasim’s decision to rescind his retirement from international cricket, Naqvi stated that the consensus was to strengthen the team for the forthcoming T20 World Cup, hence the invitation for Wasim to return.
