23 Niger Soldiers Tragically Lost in a Terrorist Attack Following the Nation’s Decision to Discontinue Military Ties with the US

In a border region between Niger and Burkina Faso, a tragic incident occurred where 23 Nigerien military personnel lost their lives due to an ambush, as reported by the nation’s defense ministry.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, soldiers participated in cleanup efforts close to Burkina Faso’s Mai region. Tragically, they faced a “complicated ambush” during this time, resulting in their deaths. The statement also mentioned that approximately 30 terrorists were successfully neutralized.

In the landlocked nation of Niger, home to 25 million individuals and situated within a volatile region, a recent declaration has been made to temporarily halt military collaboration with the United States.

For more than ten years, Niger has been a steadfast ally of the United States in the Sahel region. Encompassing Africa from the Atlantic to the Red Sea, the Sahel is among the world’s largest areas with poor governance. In this region, various criminal activities such as terrorism, banditry, human and arms trafficking, cattle theft, and armed robbery have persisted.

In September 2023, the Nigerien Military government adjusted the price at which France purchased uranium

As per a recent publication in The Spectacle Niger, a significant player in the global uranium market, a bold move has been made to raise the price of uranium from €0.80/kg to €200/kg. The World Nuclear Association (WNA) states that Niger ranks as the seventh-largest uranium producer globally, and in 2022, it was the second-largest supplier of natural uranium to the European Union.

It is anticipated that this decision will significantly enhance Niger’s economy and contribute positively to the worldwide uranium market.

Historically, France served as Niger’s main uranium purchaser, buying it at a rate of €0.80 per kilogram. Interestingly, France also acquired uranium from Canada at a significantly higher price of €200 per kilogram.
